f-number (ie. f/3.5-5.6)
The f-number is the focal length divided by the effective aperture
diameter. It is a quantitative measure of lens speed. If a lens has a
small f-number, it doesn't need much light.
Focal length (ie. 50mm)
The distance in mm from the center of the lens to the focal point, which
is located on the sensor or film if the subject is in focus. A change in
focal length allows you to come closer to the subject or to move away from
it and has therefore an indirect effect on perspective.
Optical zoom (ie. 18-54mm = 3 x zoom)
Maximum focal lenght / minimum focal length
Pixel (ie. 14 megapixels)
Sensor consist of an array of pixels collecting light. Larger pixels
(usually in large sensors) collect more light than smaller ones.
Sensor (ie. 2.5 inches)
DSLR sensor are typically 30% to 100% of the surface of 35mm film. Larger
is better than smaller.
